5 minutes with Tadhg Bowe

This year our call for papers response was phenomenal, so instead of a panel discussion, we just had to have 4 lighting talks. Our lighting talk speakers are just as important to us as all our other speakers, squeezing their wicked Magento knowledge into just 15 minutes!

So to give you a taster, we asked Tadhg a few short questions –

1. What are you most proud of?
Excluding my wife and children, I am most proud of my upbringing. I grew up on a small farm in the middle of nowhere in Ireland. Looking back now it was a wonderful childhood. I am proud to be a ‘giver’ and not a ‘taker’.

2. Who do you most admire in your career?
Right now I most admire the movie director Ken Loach. Okay my career is not in the movies but you have to admire this man. His movies bring to life the awful truths of both modern society and historical past. #WeAreAllDanielBlake 🙂

3. Why did you want to get involved in Mage Titans UK 2016?
Mage Titans 2015 was my first exposure to a real Magento developer conference. I came away inspired. It also dawned on me that maybe, just maybe I would like to do a talk. So one year later here I am! I hope that my story will inspire others to do the same.

4. Is there anything else that you are eager to tell us about your talk?
Okay I know Data Migration is not the most exciting of topics… so I’ve tried to make it a little more fun. After all, our venue is the Comedy Store! Is there any Dutch in the audience? I can’t give too much away but what can go wrong in 15 minutes!

Many thanks to Tadhg for stopping to answer these questions, we’re really excited to hear your talk.

5 minutes with Anna Völkl

As this year’s only female speaker, we’re looking forward to hearing Anna’s talk and hope it inspires more female Magento developers to speak at next year’s Mage Titans Manchester.

Anna is a Senior Magento Developer at E-CONOMIX in Linz, Austria. She has been specialising in Magento since 2011 and was announced as Magento Master (Mentor) in 2016. Prior to this she was a Magento Developer at LimeSoda, as well as a Java & PHP Software Architect and Project Manager since 2004.

We asked Anna a few short questions –

What are you most proud of?
There’s a lot I am proud of. Most importantly I am proud of my husband and all we have achieved together.
As someone active in the Magento Community, I am proud to be part of such an engaged, inspiring and powerful community and being able to talk and exchange ideas with the best people of our ecosystem.

Who do you most admire in your career?
I admire anyone who manages work, family and open source/community contributions, and I admire all their girlfriends, boyfriends, wives and husbands for their patience! Also, I admire anyone who is a better developer than I am.

Why did you want to get involved in Mage Titans Manchester?
I’ve been following Mage Titans since it started 2 years ago. I was fascinated with how cool this event was and how it was promoted, but up until now I’ve not managed to attend. I have been to Mage Titans in Milan at the beginning of this year and at this point it was clear to me I HAVE to make it to Mage Titans UK too :slightly_smiling_face: I also love the charity aspect of the event.

Is there anything else that you are eager to tell us about your talk?
I am looking forward making developer’s passionate and more aware of secure coding and showing them how easy this can be!

Many thanks to Anna for stopping to answer these questions, we’re really excited to hear your talk.

5 minutes with James Cowie

James is a Senior Magento Engineer & Magento 2016 Magento Mover with over 10 years experience in PHP and web applications. When not at work he likes to work on BDD / TDD tools being one of the maintainers of MageSpec and BehatMage. He also co-presents MageCasts.IO with Allan MacGregor to help educate people on SOLID, TDD and BDD.

We asked James a few short questions –

What are you most proud of?
There are many things that I am proud of. Being able to share what I do and have learned from so many amazing people through my career has to be pretty high up there, seeing Las Vegas, New York, Paris, London and Manchester (and not forgetting Berlin and Germany ) is a bonus.

Who do you most admire in your career?
I admire a lot of people, we are privileged to me in a community filled with such a close and welcoming group of people. I am also really lucky to have worked with the likes of Alistair Stead, Marco DeBo and Vinai Kopp, and also have longgg chats and great friendships with many more. The one person who really stands out and whom I really admire is Mr Allan MacGregor. From early in my Magento life he has been around to push me and question things, he is an amazing friend and all around superstar to me!

Why did you want to get involved in Mage Titans UK 2016?
From the moment Jon sold me on Mage Titans many years ago and our chats at Space 48, I knew that this was a platform I wanted to be involved in. Sharing and learning are core to what I do and the way that this event is ran just confirms that this is an event built by people that love what they do, built for people who love what they do. Thats why it has become the number 1 Magento conference in the UK, and now the world.

Is there anything else that you are eager to tell us about your talk?
There are plans in the works, so without wanting to share too much I hope its going to send people away testing there every step.

Many thanks to James for answering our questions, we’re really excited to hear your talk at #MageTitansMCR.

5 minutes with Fabian Schmengler

Fabian specializes in Magento development since 2011 and since then has worked as freelance consultant and as head of development at the agency code4business. Coming from a software engineering background and several years of web development experience, he embraced test driven development from the beginning and is now looking forward to the new era of Magento 2.

Today Fabian is responsible for backend development, conception and devops work at integer_net, a small company of Magento experts in Aachen, Germany. Besides client projects he also works on commercial and open source extensions, now with the focus on migration to Magento 2.

We asked Fabian a few short questions –

What are you most proud of?
My kids 🙂 As a developer: Continuous self-improvement. I am proud not to be proud of yesterdays code today.

Who do you most admire in your career?
One of the most inspiring people I met in the Magento world is Vinai Kopp, earlier in his role as Magento guru, recently again because he encouraged me to think out of the box, and to create a new modern style of Magento module development. A great person and great teacher.

Why did you want to get involved in Mage Titans UK 2016?
Ever since I saw the announcement of the first Mage Titans and later watched the videos, I knew this was a great conference that I have to attend at some time. I liked the focus on high quality developer topics and the line up of well known names in the Magento community. Now being on the list by myself is a great honor and I’m looking forward to share my experiences there.

Many thanks to Fabian for stopping to answer these questions, we are really excited.

Introducing Max Bucknell

The early bird tickets are all gone, and call for papers has ended so we thought it would be nice to introduce a new speaker to our lineup, Max Bucknell.

Max is a software developer at Redbox Digital, specialising in JavaScript and working almost exclusively with Magento 2 over the past year. Very passionate about the Magento community, he can often be found in community events such as the London Magento Meetup, or #realmagento. Outside of work, he is an avid rugby fan and lover of strange and old programming languages.

We asked Max a few short questions –

What are you most proud of?
This is a tough question, Stacey. I think that overall, I’m most proud of finishing my degree, even though I really didn’t want to. But I don’t know if that’s something to be proud of, or just foolhardy.

Who do you most admire in your career?
There are many people I’ve looked up to all my life, but one of my favourite examples is Ada Lovelace.

Why did you want to get involved in Mage Titans UK 2016?
I got involved after attending the inaugural Mage Titans (I want to say 2014), and thinking that I might have something of value to share with the wider community.

Is there anything else that you are eager to tell us about your talk?
It’s subject to development, but I hope to have some things to demo over the course of the presentation. Fun, but useful as well.

Many thanks to Max for stopping to answer these questions, we are really excited.
